Just spent a bit of time searching and hacking away (credits to https://ntk.me/2012/09/07/os-x-on-os-x for the modified installer technique).

Make sure you have a legal copy of OS X 10.11 from the Mac App Store before doing this.

CREATING THE MODIFIED INSTALLER:

Parallels For Mac El Capitan

  1. Open Terminal

  2. Install iESD using the command 'gem install iesd' (You might need to 'sudo' this command depending on the write permissions you have set up. Do this at your own risk, of course. I would recommend setting the correct permissions on the required folder(s) instead.)

  3. Once installed, run the following command to create a boot-modified OS X installer:

PREPARING THE VM IN PARALLELS:

Parallels desktop 9 for mac el capitan
  1. Click the '+' button

  2. Click 'Install Windows or another OS from a DVD or image file', then click 'Continue'

  3. Tick 'Continue without a source', then click 'Continue'

  4. From the dropdown list, select 'OS X'

  5. Make sure 'Customize settings before installation' is ticked, then click 'Continue'

  6. In the configuration window, click the “Hardware” tab

  7. Click the “Hard Disk 1” item, then click the “-“ button to remove it

  8. Press the “+” button, then select “Hard Disk”

  9. Select 32GB or above for the size of the disk and unselect “Expanding disk”. Click “OK”

  10. Click the “USB & Bluetooth” item. Unselect “Web cameras” and “USB 3.0 support” (failing to do so will result in a kernel panic when trying to run the installer)

  11. Click the “CD/DVD 1” item. In the “Connect to:” dropdown, select “Choose an image file…”. Choose the DMG you created in the last set of steps

  12. Click the “CPU & Memory” item. Set “Memory” to 2048MB or above.

  13. Click the “Video” item. Set “Video memory” to 128MB or above.

RUNNING THE VM:

Parallels For Mac Os X El Capitan

  1. Press Play on the configured VM

  2. Install OS X as normal and enjoy!
