Parallels For Mac Windows 10 Screen Resolution Rendering Bad

Active2 years, 4 months ago

Parallels supports Chrome OS, Linux and even the Windows 8 Developer Preview, which makes it a full-blown virtual PC solution and not just a way of running Windows on your Mac. In fact, a built-in. I have a MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011) with OS X El Capitan. I just installed the trial version of Parallels Desktop 11.1.2 for Mac Business Edition, Parallels tools, and Windows 7 x32 bit in english.

The resolution of my Mac is 1920*1200. I have set the resolution of Windows to be 1600*1000 to occupy the whole screen. The problem is everything in Windows (e.g., fonts, texts, images) looks a little bit blurry, at least not as clear as Mac. This does not change with other resolution of Windows.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

PS: after 1 hour looking at the blurry Windows, I feel already dizzy...

Edit 1: I take two screenshots (one from Mac, the other one from Windows; both of them under 1920*1200) to show the difference:

Windows 10 Screen Resolution Issues

You shouldn't be setting the resolution of Windows in Parallels.

Boot Windows and choose Virtual Machine → Install Parallels Tools and follow the instructions. This sets the resolution automatically according to the window dimensions.

If Parallels Tools doesn't set the right resolution in full screen, in Configuration set Full Screen: Scale to fit screen to Auto.

Apparently, this is caused by Windows somehow not being well 'adapted' to the high DPI of Apple's Retina displays. The problem is described (and a solution given) in the Parallels Knowledge Base at http://kb.parallels.com/en/114700, but both the Knowledge Base article and the other answer here are slightly out of date at present, so I thought I'd provide my own answer. This is what worked for me, but some menus may be slightly different for you.

  1. Launch your Windows VM in Parallels.
  2. Click Actions in the top menu bar of your VM window (may be called Virtual Machine in some versions of Parallels)
  3. Click Configure in the dropdown menu
  4. Click Hardware in the top menu bar of the configuration menu
  5. Click Graphics in the left sidebar (may be called Video in some versions of Parallels)
  6. Select the Best for Retina display radio button (may instead be an Enable Retina resolution checkbox in some versions of Parallels)

You'll be prompted to restart your VM, and then the blur should be gone.

In case you can't find them in your UI, all the things I had to click are circled in the screenshots below:

Parallels at 2880x1800 with mac set to Best for Retina display resolution - Click to the the actual screenshot

Parallels has recently announced in a video that their virtualization solution Parallels Desktop for Mac now “takes full advantage of the Retina Display on a Mac'.

That sounds awesome, but it’s not true. It’s actually pretty much a lie! :( – You can take some advantage of the Retina display, but definitely not full advantage.

All you can do is set Windows to believe it is running with a 2880 x 1800 pixels display. And that is indeed the physical pixel resolution of a Macbook Pro Retina display…

But, in NO CIRCUMSTANCE can you actually map each pixel from the 2880 x 1800 virtual machine to a physical pixel of the actual screen.

What you get instead, is blurry scaling all the waty down!

On the first screenshot below (click to zoom) you will see how 2880 x 1800 is scaled down (and BLURRED down) to 1440 x 900 if you keep you Mac runnign with the default setting of “Best for retian display'.

On the second screenshot below you will se how 2880 x 1800 is scaled down (and still blurred down) to 1920 x 1200 if you change your mac display settings to the highest scaled resolution. This solution makes your windows look a tiny little bit better but it also makes your mac apps look less sharp (because they are now scaled too! Remember, you are no longer running in “Best for Retina display” mode!)

Parallels, inc.: What we need is:

Parallels For Mac Windows 10

  1. Not touch the mac resolution setting and keep it at “Best for Retina display”
  2. Have Windows (and hopefully other OSes too) map their pixels to a 2880x1800 buffer and NOT to a Mac resolution buffer! If Safari can do it when rendering web pages, why can’t you do it when rendering an OS screen? (Yes I know it may not be that easy, but you get the idea…)
  3. Optionally: have your Windows tools automatically increase the dpi setting of Windows so the menus and text don’t look so small…
